Story Through an Image:
If you’re attending the conference but have not applied to present your work, you still have time to contribute! This conference features a ‘story through an image’ category, where you can choose or create an image that conveys an idea (or more) about your work, your interest, and/or your engagement in digital archaeology or heritage.
Conference attendees will vote for their favourite and there will be a small prize for the winner
If you are interested, please send your digital image to us alongside a title, caption, and credits.
The image – which must be your own work – will be printed by the conference organisers and will need to be of sufficiently high-resolution to be reproduced at A4 size (300dpi minimum, 210mm x 297mm or 2480 x 3508 pixels). The preferred format will be TIFF or PNG.
Send your image to caauk25@mcdonald.cam.ac.uk by 8th December
Workshops:
Workshop 1: Intro to Bayesian Statistics
This workshop will provide a gentle introduction to the core principles of Bayesian inference and probabilistic programming languages. The objective is to gain key insights on what makes this inferential paradigm different from more common frequentist approaches, as well as highlight unique challenges and opportunities offered by Bayesian methods. In the practical session, we will be analysing a simple case study using the R statistical programming language. Attendees are expected to have some basic familiarity with R and basic inferential statistics (e.g. Chi-squared test, binomial test, etc.).
Workshop 2: Intro to Arches
Arches is an open-source data management platform that is freely available for organisations worldwide to install, configure, and extend in accordance with their individual needs and without restrictions on its use. Arches has been adapted to support documentation of historic environments, heritage science data and reference and sample collections. This workshop will provide a comprehensive overview of Arches as it relates to the management of historic environments, including a dive into the forthcoming vocabulary and thesauri management platform Lingo from Philip Carlisle (Historic England). Two projects based at the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research, Cambridge – Mapping Archaeological Heritage in South Asia (MAHSA) and Mapping Africa’s Endangered Archaeological Sites and Monuments (MAEASaM) – will also demonstrate their implementations of Arches for managing data on archaeological heritage.
